Westering High School Subjects Offered

ACADEMIC

Westering offers a wide choice of subjects that enable learners to go to University, Technikon  or  various colleges or to continue with a career in business or a trade.

Grade 9 learners are counselled each year to explain the subject choices for the National Senior Certificate course. It is very important that the correct choices be made at this stage, particularly with regard to later tertiary education entrance.

GRADES 8 & 9  (General Education And Training : GET) 

The grade 8 learners continue with the senior phase of the General Education and Training (GET) band of their school career.   During the last two years of this phase (grades 8 and 9) the learners master nine learning areas.

GRADE 10, 11 & 12 (NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE COURSE)

A learner must do 7 subjects   * 4 compulsory subjects from Group A (including two languages)  and three from Group B.

FURTHER STUDY REQUIREMENTS

  1. A learner must pass matric (NSC) AND
  2. For a Diploma:  The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) (40-49%) or better in four recognised NSC 20-credit subjects (only LO is not 20-credit).  Some diplomas require more specific combinations.  (Check with University, Technikon or College.)
  3. For a Bachelor’s Degree:  The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) (50-59%) or better in four subjects chosen from the following list of 20-credit NSC subjects (which will be known  as the designated subject list):

NOTE:  CAT and Tourism are not designated subjects, so while a learner can take them, they cannot be in the four subjects mentioned above for a BACHELOR’S DEGREE.   They also cannot both be taken for a Bachelor’s Degree.
