The department of Medical Sciences offers postgraduate studies; M.Sc. and PhD. Candidates are expected to have basic knowledge of research methodology and research skills, as well, as in-depth knowledge in the specialization field for PhD, and further basic statistical analysis is envisaged. Admission criteria of the University and further, prescription of access to the qualification by the School of Health Sciences and the Department of Medical Sciences apply.

M.Sc modules

Master of Science in Medical Sciences [M.Sc. Med. Sci.] in the Department of Medical Sciences is a qualification by research only. The programme aims to train students who are in possession of post-graduate level scientific knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to conduct Medical Science research for Southern Africa and globally. The purpose of this programme is to train students in aspects of the production of inquisitive and intuitive information analysis, development of research projects, development of research operational plan, development of research monitoring and evaluation plan and use of research to generate clarification of medical problems.

Upon completion of their M.Sc. graduates can register Doctorate in any national and international institution.

Doctor of Philosophy [PhD] in the Department of Medical Sciences is by research only. The programme aims to train students who are in possession of post-graduate level scientific knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to conduct independent advanced Medical Science research in order to provide Medical Science solutions for Africa and globally and fill the void of Medical Researchers in Southern  Africa and Africa.

The purpose of this qualification is to train students in the aspects of systematic acquisition and utilization of medical and clinical knowledge, creation and interpretation of new medical and clinical knowledge by conducting original research, choosing, validating and applying principal techniques and methodologies in solving medical research problems and systematic data collection and statistical analysis for the in-depth understanding of medical phenomena. Upon completion of PhD, graduates can continue with a post-doctoral programme in any national and international institution.
