The Department of Mathematics & Applied Mathematics is one of the largest departments at the University of Cape Town. The department covers a broad range of interests, and strives to combine excellence with equity. Members of staff are amongst the best in the world, and the department is proud to list many leading international researchers in its ranks.

Its vibrant research ethos in fields of study as diverse as category theory, topology, algebra, analysis, discrete mathematics, cryptography, general relativity and cosmology, string theory, computational mechanics, dynamical systems and biological modelling, attract students and research visitors from around the world.

Mathematics is essential for a high level career not only in physical science and engineering, but also in many branches of IT, biology, medicine, commerce, and industry. The Department trains students to international standards, and its students have found places in universities and companies throughout South Africa and worldwide.
