St John’s College salutes the #ClassOf2023 on exceptional matric results.


St John’s College 2023 Matric Results: 544 distinctions from 140 students at St John’s College

St John’s College is proud to announce another set of truly exceptional matric results. All 140 matric students who wrote the 2023 IEB examinations have not only passed, but all have achieved a Bachelor’s Degree Pass.

“These achievements would be exceptional under any circumstances, let alone after two years so severely affected by the pandemic,” said Stuart West, Executive Headmaster.  “Our students have demonstrated resilience, a disciplined work ethic and academic responsibility, which is evident in their academic excellence. The engaged and nurturing dedication of our teachers has provided the confident foundation from which our Matrics have soared.”

Five students – Alexander Sittmann, Tivian Reddy, Sazi Bongwe, Kapil Ramlall and Christopher Pearce – have been included on the IEB Outstanding Achievements list, achieving within the top 5% of candidates in six or more subjects, including Life Orientation.

Adam Gear, Luke Heurlin, Matthew Knight, Hamza Moosa, Keshav Rayment and Jun Tan were featured on the IEB Commendable Achievements list, each achieving within the top 5% in five subjects, including a distinction for Life Orientation.

Takudzwanashe Sithole is also to be commended for achieving 100% in his mathematics examinations, while Sazi Bongwe achieved 100% in Life Orientation.

The Class of 2023 also feature in the top 1% of candidates per subject, including Sazi Bongwe for Dramatic Arts, English Home Language, isiZulu FAL, Life Orientation and Physical Sciences; Alexander Sittmann for Afrikaans FAL, Latin SAL, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physical Sciences; Jun Tan for History and Mathematics; Tivian Reddy for English Home Language, History and Information Technology; Christopher Pearce for Life Orientation, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences; Adam Gear for English Home Language and Life Orientation; Kapil Ramlall for English Home Language, Information Technology, Life Orientation and Physical Sciences; Matthew Knight for Information Technology, Mathematics and Physical Sciences; Ydhan Naidoo for English Home Language, Geography, History and Life Sciences; Brett Brachmayer for Physical Sciences; Lwandle Ntshangase for English Home Language and Life Orientation; Joseph Goldblatt for English Home Language and Life Orientation; James Gordon for Dramatic Arts and English Home Language; Alexander Kritzas for English and Modern Greek SAL, and Benjamin Barry for Dramatic Arts and TCL Practical 7.

Tiyani Mthombeni also featured in the top 1% of candidates per subject for English Home Language; Motheo Moledi for History; Thomas Granig, Michael Horwitz and Gregory Cheadle for Information Technology, and Luke Carey for Life Orientation.

“It has been an honour working with these remarkable young men at St John’s College, and while we celebrate our many top achievers, we recognise and celebrate every matric who worked incredibly hard to achieve their personal best in their final examinations,” said West.

Of the 140 young men who wrote the matric exams, 15 students achieved an average of 90% and above (10.7% of the class). An average of at least 80% was achieved by 68 boys (48.6% of the group), while 93 boys (two-thirds) achieved at least 75%, and their names will be etched into the walls of Big School. An average of 3.89 distinctions per candidate were achieved by the Class of 2023.

Mathematics had a 90% uptake with an overall average of 80% in this subject at St John’s, with many students excelling in Advanced Programme Mathematics.

Physical Sciences has 35% of candidates achieving an average of 80% or more, and 80% of our students achieving 60% or higher in the subject. This is especially pleasing as 79% of our students opted for Physical Sciences.

The year group achieved an overall average of 80% for English, with 51% of the students achieving 80% or more and 100% of our boys achieving more than 60% in their final examinations.

Other subjects that returned excellent results with overall averages of 80% or more included Dramatic Arts, English, French, Geography, German, History, IT, Latin, Mathematical Literacy, Mathematics and Music.

Top academic achievers of the St John’s College #ClassOf2023 were:

  • Sazi Bongwe achieved an average of 95.9% and nine distinctions (Dramatic Arts, English Home Language, History, isiZulu FAL, Life Orientation, Mathematics and Physical Sciences as well as Advanced Programme English and Advanced Programme Mathematics)
  • Alexander Sittmann achieved an average of 94.7% with eight distinctions (Afrikaans FAL, English Home Language, Latin SAL, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physical Sciences as well as Advanced Programme English.
  • Jun Tan achieved an average of 94% with nine distinctions (Afrikaans FAL, English Home Language, German SAL, History, Life Orientation, Mathematics, Physical Sciences and ABRSM Practical 7 as well as Advanced Programme Mathematics).
  • Tivian Reddy achieved an average of 93.5% and eight distinctions (Afrikaans FAL, English Home Language, History, Information Technology, Life Orientation, Mathematics and Physical Sciences as well as Advanced Programme Mathematics.)
  • Christopher Pearce achieved an average of 93% with seven distinctions (Afrikaans FAL, English Home Language, French SAL, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physical Sciences as well as Advanced Programme Mathematics).
  • Adam Gear achieved an average of 92.7% with eight distinctions (English Home Language, isiZulu FAL, Latin SAL, Life Orientation, Mathematics, Music and Physical Sciences as well as Advanced Programme Mathematics.
  • Kapil Ramlall achieved an average of 92.7% and 8 distinctions (Afrikaans FAL, English Home Language, Information Technology, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physical Sciences as well as Advanced Programme Mathematics).
  • Matthew Knight achieved an average of 92.2% and eight distinctions (Afrikaans FAL, English Home Language, Information Technology, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physical Sciences as well as Advanced Programme Mathematics).
  • Ydhan Naidoo achieved an average of 92.2% and seven distinctions (Afrikaans FAL, English Home Language, Geography, History, Life Orientation, Life Sciences and Mathematics).
