Benoni – Area Information
Benoni, Gauteng province, South Africa, east of Johannesburg. It is situated at 5,419 feet (1,652 m) above sea level and covers two sides of a valley that borders four lakes.
Benoni was established as a mining camp after the local discovery of gold in 1887. The local mining chairman, Sir George Farrar, landscaped the valley in the early 1900s, and Benoni has officially declared a town in 1907. It is now part of the industrial complex of the Witwatersrand and is particularly noted for its iron and steelworks and brass foundry.
Leisure Activities
Indoor
In the main all-purpose hall, students have access to table tennis, indoor basketball and a pool table.
Outdoor
Outdoor activities include soccer and cricket matches against congregational teams in the area. A tennis court is also available to students. Judo classes have also been featured. On Friday afternoons, students who request shopping time at the local malls are taken by school bus.
Malls & Shopping
Benoni offers 2 Malls within a 4-mile radius of the SA Bible College, Northmead and The Square. The biggest and newest mall of all, Lakeside, which is downtown, is a further 2 miles away on the highway.
Other Available Interests
Area-wide Youth Camps are held by different congregations around the country during school holiday periods. Many of our SA Bible College students attend these camps as teachers and camp counsellors.
