A diverse student population includes students from all over South Africa. 10% of the student population are from outside of South Africa. The institution has graduated in excess of 2500 designers, that have integrated into the South African design industry and taken up positions globally too. 2018 sees the expansion of the institution into the global market, making Inscape the first South African institution to open a campus in Dubai. Inscape believes in offering value driven products to ensure the diverse growth of the creative sector and industry at large. We have an established institutional culture that is unique to Inscape and its students. Our culture is built on a value system that encourages quality, authenticity and relationships. We strive for this to be reflected in all areas of our institution. As an organisation, we promote inclusivity and access to higher learning. Inscape annually offers a number of partial or full scholarships to assist deserving candidates who otherwise would not have the opportunity to embark on their chosen careers.
Our approach to learning is embedded in our vision and mission:
We strive to facilitate holistic learning to develop each individual to achieve their full potential in society. A trans and multi-disciplinary attitude towards design ensures that our graduates have an awareness of a variety of disciplines in the sector. They are able to easily integrate the knowledge and skills learnt across industries. Our industry-relevant courses, as well as industry-based lecturers, ensure that learning is up to date with the latest trends and technologies available. We adopt a unique student-centred teaching and learning approach aimed at lifelong learning. Our lecturer student ratio is low to ensure individual attention beyond the immediate academic needs of our students. We understand the dynamics of small class culture and maximize the output of the student within this environment. Students are, however, expected to take responsibility for their own learning and strive to ultimately become independent learners. We instil a teaching approach that is grounded in the principles of Work-Integrated Learning (WIL). Graduates who leave us are confident to enter the business world. We adopt a business approach in our curriculum and classrooms to prepare graduates for both the expected opportunities and challenges in the working world.
Continued learning:
Access to further learning is high on our priority list and we are proud that more than two-thirds of our students who enter into our Higher Certificate programmes go on to be accepted into qualifications at either Inscape or other accredited and registered higher education institutions.
Our teaching practices:
We practice a project-based practical application of knowledge and skills in our approach to creative learning. Our curriculum is project-based and developed using Outcomes-Based Education typologies. Practical concepts are explained and demonstrated within the courseware and applied to realistic project briefs, exposing students to independent critical thinking and creative problem-solving. Industry engagements are encouraged and integrated into programme outcomes. Experimentation, group discussion and practical application of knowledge and skills are facilitated. Initial free experimentation is followed by more formal learning of knowledge and skills.
Our Assessment Tools:
We apply continuous project-based assessment, against defined outcomes, resulting in marks per assignment. Our students engage in peer assessment and self-assessment activities as a result of various types of critiques. We facilitate rigorous internal and external moderation procedures as part of our quality enhancement strategy. There are resubmission policies in place to assist students, where necessary, with extended opportunities to improve their learning.
Academic Assistance:
An open-door policy enables students to approach their lecturers for anything they may need related to their studies. Student performance appraisals are conducted at predetermined times and concerns raised by lecturers are addressed immediately by the Campus Academic Manager. Early intervention strategies are implemented to aid students in progressing through the system successfully.
We currently service Southern Africa through four face to face campuses. Our Distance Learning option serves both local and international students. We have recently launched our online virtual learning platform and are the first South African institution to plant a campus in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates offering proudly South African products, sharing best practices and taking our rainbow nation to the world.
