  • Economic and Management Sciences:
    • Grades 8 & 9 it divides into two subjects, viz. Accounting and Business Studies, to provide students with the foundation for Grade 10 Accounting.

NUMERACYNumeracy is offered to Grade 8 learners during school hours to assist with basic calculations and mathematical concepts.

ADVANCED MATHEMATICSRandburg High School offers good learners an opportunity to prepare for student life by offering an advanced Mathematics subject such as AdMaths (Advanced Program Mathematics). The subject content bridges the gap between Grade 12 and the first university year.

AdMaths is hosted in collaboration with the AdMaths School in Brackenfell. Learners can follow the full-time program at school or join the distance education program. At the end of Grade 12, the “Independent Examinations Board” exam is written and the learner receives a certificate. It is also currently negotiating to gain international recognition for this qualification.

AdMaths already starts in Grade 9. The content of this curriculum is also an excellent bridging to the Grade 10 school curriculum. A learner who regularly gets 80% for Maths is a good AdMaths candidate. The AdMaths pass rate is 60%.

FURTHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING – FETLearners who successfully complete the NSC FET receive an NSC (National Senior Certificate) certificate at the end of Grade 12.

Every full qualification registered at level 4 of the NQF (National Qualifications Framework, NQF) is called a “Further Education and Training Certificate” (FETC).

The purpose of the FETC is to:

  • equip learners with knowledge, skills and values ​​to participate meaningfully in the community;
  • form a reliable and credible basis for further access to higher education;
  • give employers a realistic profile of the learner’s knowledge, skills and abilities.

Learners must have a minimum qualification of 130 credits at level 4 (50%). Credits cannot be collected over a period of three years.

  • 40% in three subjects, one at Home Language level.
  • 30% in the other 3 subjects
  • A learner may fail one subject, provided evidence of portfolio work and assessment is available.

VAKREGULASIESMATHEMATICS OR MATHEMATICAL LITERACY

  • Mathematical Literacy involves a practical application of Mathematics eg. interest rates, exchange rates, graphs and statistics.
  • Mathematics involves Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Analytical Geometry.

IMPORTANCE OF MATHEMATICS

Mathematics has been an important component of university admission. Universities generally require Mathematics for the BCom and BSc fields of study with at least a 4-point entry mark (50-59%). Learners must therefore make sure of their field of study in order to achieve the necessary admission point score.

  • Mathematics is required for Physical Sciences and IT and as of 2018 for Accounting.
  • Mathematics is highly recommended for Engineering Graphics and Design, provided the learner wants to study further in a relevant field of study.

ENGLISH HOME LANGUAGE

  • Above-average performance at the second language level, a special passion for English literature.
  • (60% in Grade 9 is recommended as a guideline.)
  • English as Home Language is recommended for bursary applications.
  • English Home Language counts more weight when determining eg. Dux learner and the designation of the National Top Ten in Grade 12.

PASS REQUIREMENTS FOR FURTHER STUDIES

A learner must pass seven subjects (four subjects from Group A and three subjects from Group B).

DIPLOMA NSC and at least 40% (3) in four 20-credit subjects.
GRADE NSC and at least 50% (4) in four of the designated 20-credit subjects.

Designated Subjects: Business Studies; Dramatic Arts; economy; Physical sciences; Geography; Engineering Graphics and Design; Information Technology; Life sciences; Accounting; Languages ​​(one language of learning and teaching as used by higher education institutions); Visual arts; Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy; German and Music

The following subjects are not included: Computer Applications Technology, Design, Hospitality Studies and Tourism – these subjects do count for admission points.

Note: Life Orientation is only a 10-credit box. (So ​​not part of the designated subjects.) Consult specific Life Orientation policies of specific tertiary institutions.

In order to gain admission to a specific faculty and programs, combinations of recognized NSC subjects, as well as specific levels of achievement of prospective students, are required. In this regard, the Admission Point Score (APS) and a summary of the faculty-specific requirements are set, ie the APS per program, as well as the specific subjects required by the program. (The APS is the old M-score.)
