Introduction

In a fast-evolving world with information overload, general practitioners need to manage their patients with facts, not fiction. This course will assist GP’s to manage their internet ‘clever’ patients with updated clinical expertise, contextualising information within a South African environment.

The programme is designed to meet the specific needs of medical practitioners and will simultaneously comply with medical regulatory bodies. It is a formal qualification that can provide access to further study in general practice at NQF level 8.

The curriculum is designed to address both clinical and public health as well as ethical issues in general practice.

Who Should Enrol

Prospective students must be in possession of the MBChB or equivalent qualification and be registered with the HPCSA or a similar regulatory body outside South Africa.

Course Design

The PGDGP is a part-time distance course consisting of 10 modules (7 compulsory and 3 electives). Each module is supported by extensive self-study learning material. Participants will be assessed by means of pre-compiled case studies, assignments, a business plan (summative assessment) and a formal written examination (summative assessment) on all the modules. The assessment is designed to transfer key concepts from the programme onto the participant’s working environment. The minimum period for completion is 18 months and the maximum period is 36 months.

Assessment

Participants need to submit all summative assessments for each enrolled module. A 70% pass rate is required for all modular assignments except for the modular assignment on Practice Management which has a pass rate of 50%. A minimum pass rate of 50% is also required for the final written integrated examination.

Accreditation

FPD will award the successful participants with a Postgraduate Diploma in General Practice on completion of this formal registered qualification should they successfully complete the assessment process. The minimum period for completion is 18 months and the maximum period is 36 months.
