ABOUT THE COMPANY – SOL PLAATJE EDUCATIONAL PROJECT

Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarship South Africa | Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje was a South African journalist, translator, writer, intellectual, linguist and politician. He was also a founding member and first General Secretary of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which is now the African National Congress (ANC). There have been many institutions named in his honour, including the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, the Sol Plaatje University, the Sol Plaatje Museum and Library and the Sol Plaatje Educational Trust.

ABOUT THE CANON COLLINS SOL PLAATJE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The Canon Collins Trust, partnered with the Sol Plaatje Educational Project, is inviting students to apply for the Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarship, for the 2023 academic year.

Scholarships will be awarded to exceptional students, to pursue Postgraduate (Masters and PhD) studies, in these areas:

Education: Policy and Practice
Humanities (including Arts, Anthropology, History and Literature)
Justice (including Economics, Climate Justice, Law and Politics)

Top priority will be given to Climate Justice related studies – in science or applied science fields (the application must be able to demonstrate relevance to climate justice-related matters).

The Scholarship will be awarded to the value of between R20 000 and R100 000, depending on the student’s circumstances. Masters students will receive funding for up to 2 years and PhD students will receive funding for up to 3 years. Funding will be renewed based on satisfactory academic performance.

Scholarship recipients will be required to take part in annual conferences and various smaller events throughout the year.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CANON COLLINS SOL PLAATJE SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

You must be a South African, Namibian or Zimbabwean citizen or have refugee status in one of these countries
You must reside in South Africa, Namibia or Zimbabwe
You must have completed an undergraduate first-degree qualification or will graduate in 2023 (second class, upper division or equivalent)
You must be studying or intend on studying towards a Masters’s or PhD, in one of the areas listed above, in 2023
You must be studying or intend on studying on a full-time or part-time basis (distance learning may also be considered)
You must be studying or intend on studying at a university in South Africa

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

ID document, Birth Certificate, Passport or Driver’s License (certified copy)
Refugee status, if applicable (certified copy)
Degree certificates, if available (certified copy)
Academic transcripts (certified copy)
PhD proposal, if applicable
2 latest payslips, if employed

Note: shortlisted candidates will also be required to submit 2 letters of reference, relating to their suitability for the scholarship. One reference should be from a current or most recent academic supervisor and one from an employer. Applicants who have not been employed before may submit a reference from voluntary work or two academic references. PhD students will also be required to submit a supporting statement from their supervisor.
