BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

Rationale
This program has been reviewed with the intention of making the program competitive while maintaining the high standard of the program. With the Courses offered, the graduates will become highly competitive in the job market and at the same time prepare them in becoming independent in making choices of career and self-employment. Students are trained not only in the technical areas of specialization but also in personal development, communication skills and entrepreneurship.
Programme Objectives
The primary aim of the Computer Science Department is to provide sound training leading to a B.Sc. degree in computer science. It is also the aim of the department to provide general computer science Courses required in other disciplines. It is intended that upon completion of the programme the graduate should:
i) be able to identify and apply software engineering and hardware engineering tools effectively;
ii) have acquired adequate skills to be able to design and implement suitable computer applications, both software and hardware, and advice on such applications;
iii) be fully equipped to take on postgraduate studies in computer science; and
iv) have attained a level of academic competence in computer science to be able to function as a productive member of his/her profession.
Admission Requirements
Candidates must meet the Minimum University general admission criteria.
Candidates must have passed the K.C.S.E., or equivalent examination with the following minimum grades to be considered:
EITHER
Mathematics B+
Physics B
OR
Mathematics B+
Physical Science B+
IN ADDITION
Obtained a B grade in one humanity subject and a B grade in one language subject.
Holder of a diploma with credits passes and above in Computer science or equivalent from institutions recognized by Egerton University.
Students admitted with Diploma in Computer science may transfer credits according to Egerton University regulations.
Course Structure and Duration
A student is required to register for at least 18 CF‘s and at most 21 CF‘s in each of the eight semesters of study. In the first and second years of study in computer science, the student studies a mixture of compulsory computer science Courses together with selected Courses in mathematics and physics. In the first year of study, the student is required to take four of the University common CORE Courses. These courses are intended to introduce the student to the basics of computer science as well as to provide the student with a sound grounding in areas of mathematics and physics that are important to the study of computer science. In the third year of study, the student is able to tackle more advanced courses in Computer Science. There will be optional Courses offered in a THIRD year semester 1 that would cover contemporary topics in computer science. This will enable the student to be up to date with the technological changes in the discipline areas. In the fourth year of study, the student must select one course from a list of available optional courses.
The programme will adopt the code COMP (Computer) followed by three digits. This is with exception of service Courses where the department requesting the Course decides when and to which year of study the Course is to be offered. The first digit refers to the year of study; the second digit refers to the field of specialisation (a zero represents introductory Courses); while the third digit represents serialisation within a group with a specialised area.
Examination Regulations
All examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute XXVIII.
Grading System
The grading of examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXVIII.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the stipulated period.
Degree Classification
Degree classification shall be in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXVIII.

DIPLOMA IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

Rationale

They will also be able to handle self-employment. Students are trained not only in the technical areas of specialization but also in self-discipline, communication skills and entrepreneurship.
Programme Objectives
The aim of this programme is to prepare students to fit into the world market entering at the middle level. The students are also to be armed with adequate skills that would allow them to advance their careers in the computer profession. The objective of the program is to address the challenges listed above. Graduates of the program will be able to work independently or in teams in managing Information Systems and solving Information Technology related problems. The graduates will also be able to join undergraduate degree programs in computer science or related disciplines at the senior level. The general objectives of the program are:
i) training students who will conduct themselves with a commitment to excellence, high productivity and social responsibility;
ii) equipping the students with skills required to work as user support professionals, Network Administrators, WebMasters or Programmers.
Admission Requirements
The following shall be eligible for admissions to Diploma in Computer Science at Egerton University as per University Statute: Applicant must possess KCSE certificate with a minimum of C. In addition, he/she must have obtained at least the following grades:
Physics C OR Physical Sciences C
Maths C Kiswahili C
English C
OR
Applicant must possess KCE/EACE certificate with at least a Division three (3) with at least the following grades:
Physics or Physical Sciences Credit five (5).
Mathematics Credit four (4).
English Language Credit six (6) OR
Kiswahili Credit (6)
OR
Applicant must have passed KACE/EAACE examination. In addition, he or she must possess at least:
Subsidiary pass in Mathematics and
At least a credit pass in Physics/Physical Sciences at the Ordinary level.
OR
Any equivalent qualification such as Certificate in Microcomputer Application, Programming etc recognized by the senate of Egerton University. Those with weak grades in physics and maths to be considered if they have certificates in Computer Applications and bridging from institutions recognized by Egerton University.
Course Structure and Duration
Students will take and pass all the eighty-five (85) Credit Factors. Full-time students will complete the programme in a minimum period of eighteen (18) months within four semesters. Part-time students must register for a minimum of nine – (9) Credit Factors per Semester. Part-Time students will take a maximum of eight semesters (36 months) to complete the programme. The programme will adopt the code COMP (Computer) followed by four digits.
The first digit will be zero (0), indicating the course is a diploma course.
The second digit signifies the year of study.
The third digit will denote the sub-discipline as follows:
1- Computer Architecture and Hardware
2 – Operating Systems
3 – Software Engineering
4 – Programming Languages
5 – Database Management Systems
6 – Distributed Systems
7 – Computer Networks
8 – Management and Entrepreneurship
9 – General Topics
The fourth digit signifies the sequential position of the course in a specific sub-discipline.
Examination Regulations
