On behalf of the faculty, staff and students, we would like to welcome you to the Department of Nursing and Midwifery’s webpage. The Department of Nursing and Midwifery was established in 1962 and is nested within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University.

The department aims to be the leader, recognised for innovation and excellence, in the nursing profession in Africa and beyond. We will lead by facilitating transformative learning and teaching practices that are embedded in evidence-based practices and research in order to enhance health in the communities and the knowledge economy we serve.

The Department is committed to providing high-quality education and training to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Since 2019, we are offering the Bachelor of Nursing degree programme as part of our undergraduate qualification mix.

Our postgraduate programmes include Primary Health Care, Critical Care Nursing, Operating Room Nursing, Advanced Midwifery and Neonatology, Advanced Psychiatric Nursing, Nursing Education, and Nursing Management.

An array of short learning programmes is part of learning and teaching delivery in the department. Person-centeredness is the key premise on which our learning and teaching are based.

We also offer a structured or thesis master’s degree and the PhD in Nursing degree, of which candidates can participate in focused and strategic research themes relevant to the African context. Through our learning and teaching, research and clinical programmes, we are engaged in social impact projects across the province, learning from and with the communities we serve.
